Surge in seasonal influenza and other respiratory virus activity in the northern hemisphere

18 January, 2025

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and World Health Organization (WHO) have issued an epidemiological alert that highlights increased seasonal influenza and respiratory virus activities in the northern hemisphere, a 2.8% increase from the previous year. Countries in Europe and North America are particularly affected, with a predominance of A(H1N1)pdm09 and A(H3N2) subtypes. Rising rates of Influenza-Like Illnesses (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) have also been observed. The simultaneous circulation of various respiratory pathogens, including RSV and human metapneumovirus, is expected to further strain health systems. As respiratory virus activity continues to rise, the need for coordinated health responses and robust communication strategies is critical to minimize the impact of these infections on public health.
