Updated WHO school-related public health measures

16 September, 2020

The World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) updated their guidance on school-related COVID-19 measures. This Annex replaces a document published by the World Health Organization on 10 May 2020. The main changes to the document are described as “a risk-based approach for school operations in the context of COVID-19 based on the level and intensity of the transmission at administrative levels lower than the national level, age-appropriate considerations for both physical distancing and the use of masks in the school setting and comprehensive, multi-layered measures to prevent introduction and spread of SARS-COV-2 in educational setting”.

Public health and social measures (PHSM) in schools focus on safe continuity of education and social learning; minimising COVID-19 transmission within the schools; mitigating the potential for schools to act as promoters of infection; and ensuring PHSM are integrated into community level measures.

The Annex is aimed at assisting educators and policy makers in making decisions regarding running schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. The major consideration being the continuity of education and the health, safety and wellbeing of children.
