SARS-CoV-2 might have been in Barcelona in March 2019

Spain // 29 June, 2020

Testing of wastewater found the virus in samples on 15 January, 41 days before the first reported case on 25 February. The study, which has not yet been reviewed by peers, looked at stored samples of sewage water for SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes COVID-19. In addition to testing samples from 2020, the researchers went back to samples from January 2018 to December 2019 and were surprised to find one positive sample from 12 March 2019. The research again demonstrates the potential value of using wastewater to look for circulation of COVID-19 in communities.
