At least 97,074 cases and 1,718 deaths, excluding cruise-related cases.

Domestic and limited international travel has resumed, some restrictions re-enforced in Tokyo.

Status: Decreasing activity

26 October: Cases have slightly risen for an average of 563 daily new cases in the last week. Tokyo is averaging 155 new cases each day. The total confirmed case number now stands at 97,074 infections, including 1,718 deaths. Over 89,700 people have recovered to date.

20 October: Cases have stabilised with an average of just over 530 daily cases for the past week. In total there are 93,480 confirmed cases and 1,676 deaths. Tokyo accounts for 29,185 of these cases and 437 deaths.

A phase 1/2 clinical trial of the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine, BNT162b2, is due to begin in Japan. The study aims to recruit 160 people aged between 20 and 85 years. A large global trial of BNT162b2 is underway, with 44,000 people expected to be enrolled.

Restrictions for business travel between China and Japan are expected to be eased later this month.

15 October: Tokyo has registered the highest number of new cases since late August, with 284 new cases today. Dozens of daily cases are also being reported in Kanagawa and Osaka prefecture. The national total has reached 90,710 cases, including 1,646 deaths. Over 5,185 people remain in hospital being treated.

7 October: Cases have plateaued with over 470 daily cases in the last fortnight. A total of 86,543 cases have been confirmed. Over 1,000 cases have been identified in airport quarantine. Tokyo continues to contribute the largest proportion of daily cases. A gathering in Saitama province has led to a cluster of at least 28 cases among defense personnel.

Business travel between South Korea and Japan is set to resume on 8 October.

1 October: Cases have been trending downwards since a second peak in early August. Cases fell by over 60% on Tokyo, where over 4,920 cases were recorded in September. Younger people (20-40 years old) continue to make up the majority of new cases. In total there have been 83,563 cases confirmed and 1,571 – including those detected in airport quarantine but excluding the cases aboard cruise-ships.
