The World Health Organization (WHO) has made its recommendation for the composition of the northern hemisphere influenza vaccine for use in the 2018-2019 influenza season. This includes changes to the influenza A(H3N2) and influenza B components included in the 2017-18 trivalent flu vaccine, in response to the elevated flu activity this season and reduced vaccine efficacy, as well as review of the strains which have been detected in circulation.
It recommends that trivalent vaccines (those containing 3 strains) contain the following:
and quadrivalent vaccines (those containing 4 strains) contain the above 3 strains plus a B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus.
The WHO makes these recommendations in February and September each year, for the northern and southern hemisphere respectively.
