A WHO study has found that almost 65% of people in Africa have been infected with COVID-19. The study showed that exposure to the virus increased sharply following the emergence of the Beta and Delta variants and revealed that by September 2021, the true number of infections was 800 million, 97 times higher than the 8.2 million officially reported. This contrasts with estimates for global infections being 16 times higher than confirmed cases.
Undercounting of cases in Africa is linked to testing capabilities and a high prevalence of asymptomatic COVID-19 cases (67%). As of 6 April 2022, there have been 11.5 million confirmed cases in the continent and true figures are estimated to be much higher.
