WHO COVID committee: still an emergency, proof of vaccine to travel not recommended

15 January, 2021

COVID-19 remains a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), according to the World Health Organization (WHO) Emergency Committee. During their sixth meeting to discuss the disease meeting, the Committee called for worldwide expansion in genomic sequencing of the virus, data sharing, and scientific collaboration. They strongly recommended WHO develop a standardized system for naming new variants that do not use geographic names.

They discussed the need for equitable access to vaccines and "technology transfer" to enable more supply to be produced globally. Because vaccines are still in limited supply, and their efficacy not demonstrated under real-world use, the Committee recommended against requiring international travellers to show proof of vaccination to enter any country.
