10 July: The European Commission announced that group of international partners will build a facility in Senegal that will manufacture COVID-19 and other vaccines. The vaccines will be manufactured by the Institut Pasteur in Dakar. The plants is expected to produce 25 million vaccine doses a month by the end of 2022.
17 May: China has donated a further 300,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine. So far, over 430,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccination have been administered.
24 February: Senegal commenced its vaccination campaign on 23 February after receiving 200,000 doses of China’s Sinopharm. Government ministers and health workers at the health ministry in Dakar were the first to receive their shots. Senegal aims to vaccinate 3.5 million people (90% of the population) by the end of 2021. Health workers and high-risk individuals between the ages of 19 and 60 will be prioritised.
Senegal is eligible for about 1.3 million COVID-19 vaccine doses through the World Health Organization’s COVAX programme. These are expected to arrive in March. Another 3.4 million dosages are being purchases under the African Union plan.
Negotiations with Russia re purchasing Sputnik V vaccine are underway.
16 February: According to media, the Senegalese government has purchased 200,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine. The country had been in negotiations to purchase the vaccine since at least January. As part of the WHO’s COVAX scheme, Senegal is eligible for 1.3 million doses from AstraZeneca, and is also eligible for 3.4 million vaccine doses under the African Union plan. Vaccination is expected to begin by the end of February according to President Macky Sall.
