Vaccinating parents may protect children from COVID-19

29 January, 2022

A study published in Science found that unvaccinated children were protected against COVID-19 when one or both parents are vaccinated. Two periods were observed from January 17, 2021, through March 28, 2021 and from July 11, 2021, through September 30, 2021. During the first period households with vaccinated and unvaccinated parents were compared. During the second period, households with boostered and unboostered parents were compared. Findings indicated that "having a single vaccinated parent was associated with a 26.0% and 20.8% decreased risk, and having two vaccinated parents was associated with a 71.7% and 58.1% decreased risk, in the early and late periods, respectively" and  "parental vaccination confers substantial protection for unvaccinated children in the household".
