20 November, 2023

The United States Food and Drug Administration (U.S. FDA) has announced the approval of a single dose vaccine for the prevention of chikungunya virus disease. The vaccine is called Ixchiq and has been approved for people aged 18 years and over who are at increased risk of chikungunya virus disease. Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research advised "Infection with chikungunya virus can lead to severe disease and prolonged health problems, particularly for older adults and individuals with underlying medical conditions. Today's approval addresses an unmet medical need and is an important advancement in the prevention of a potentially debilitating disease with limited treatment options."
