23 February: The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) confirmed Lassa fever as the cause of the outbreak in Kaduna state. Since the beginning of 2023, over 10,200 Lassa fever infections and over 200 deaths have been reported from most states, including the federal capital territory. The majority of cases have been reported from Ondo, Edo and Bauchi states. Health authorities are implementing outbreak response activities in the affected states.
Lassa fever outbreaks are common in Nigeria and occur nearly on a yearly basis. Cases generally peak during the dry season, from December to April.
22 February: Local media sources are reporting a suspected outbreak of viral hemorrhagic fever in a military base emergency department in Kaduna. One patient and three healthcare workers are suspected to have died from acute hemorrhagic fever. The patient is thought to be the initial case, who was managed for symptoms of a febrile illness by the healthcare workers ten days ago. The emergency department has been shut down, and samples collected for analysis in Kano.
