Suspected Ebola infection in Tshopo province

Congo DRC // 22 August, 2025

During the 8th Tshopo Province Council of Ministers meeting, officials reported a suspected Ebola case in Kisangani (Tshopo province). All identified contacts are under quarantine as a precaution.

The last confirmed Ebola outbreak in the country was in 2022 in North Kivu province, when a fatal case occurred in Beni. More than 170 contacts were monitored, and no additional cases were identified. Genetic analysis linked the 2022 case to the 2018–2020 outbreak in North Kivu, suggesting it may have resulted from reactivation of the virus in a survivor, rather than ongoing human-to-human transmission.
