A study conducted by the Commonwealth Fund has estimated the number of deaths averted by the swift vaccination rollout in the United States. The modelling found that vaccination prevented 26 million cases, 1.2 million hospitalisations and 279,000 lives by the end of June. Because of the surge of Alpha variant transmission from April, the researchers conclude the vaccination campaign “had an extraordinary impact on reducing disease burden despite the emergence of highly transmissible variants.”
