The third dose of Pfizer/BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine is shown to reduce the infection rate and lower the risk of hospitalisation. A study was done in Israel between March 2020 and October 2021 and published in JAMA Internal Medicine, included the periods during which the delta variant was in circulation in the country and when booster shots were rolled-out. Over 300,000 Israelis 40 years and above who has no previous COVID-19 infection and had taken the booster dose were enrolled in the study.
The infection rate recorded after the second dose was 6.6%, while that after the booster dose was 1.8%. The risk of infection lowered two weeks after getting the booster dose, while those who had not completed two weeks of the booster or who has not received the booster were found more likely to get infected.
The risk of hospitalisation reduced by 92% to 97% among those who received the booster dose. However, researchers state that more follow-up was needed to understand the duration of immunity achieved after the booster dose.
