Rise in human metapneumovirus in New South Wales

Australia // 28 September, 2023

An increase in symptoms of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been recorded in New South Wales during September. Symptoms associated with HMPV can closely resemble the common cold such as nasal congestion, coughing, breathlessness, and fever. Complications that could result in bronchitis or pneumonia can pose greater risks to immunocompromised and vulnerable groups. Authorities are urging people to implement key infection-prevention measures, such as, hand washing, wearing a mask if sick and isolation where possible if you are unwell.
