The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) published a review of COVID-19 variants detected in the Americas region. All three of the main "variants of concern" (B.1.1.7, B.1.351, and B.1.1.28.1) have been detected in the region, with many areas reporting more than one. A total of 32 countries and territories in the region have reported at least one variant strain. The most common is B.1.1.7, which has been reported in 28 places. All three VOC have been reported in Aruba, Canada, Martinique, Saint Martin, and the United States of America.
In addition to the variants of concern, there are "variants of interest," determined by the World Health Organization: B.1.525, B.1.427/B.1.429, and B.1.1.28.2, alias P.25. Brazil and the United States have both detected at least one of these variants as well. In Brazil, variant P.2 has been reported, which is characterized due to the increase observed in the proportion of this variant in the country between September 2020 (0.7%) and February 2021 (45%). This variant has also been reported in the Americas in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Sint Maarten, the United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
