The Pan American Health Organization issued an alert of a possible early start to the 2025–26 respiratory virus season, with severity potentially higher than in previous years.
In the Americas, influenza positivity remains above 10% across the Northern Hemisphere, with continued increases in North and Central America and reaching 20% in the Caribbean. Influenza A(H3N2) is the predominant strain in most subregions, while A(H1N1)pdm09 is more common in the Andean region. Countries such as Barbados, Canada, Ecuador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, and the United States are reporting high levels of influenza activity. Meanwhile, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) circulation remains generally low, though early signs of an increase are emerging in North America.
Health authorities caution that the gradual rise in RSV could place additional strain on healthcare systems, highlighting the need for close and continuous monitoring to adjust response plans. Vaccination against respiratory illnesses, particularly for high-risk groups, is strongly encouraged.
