PAHO (the World Health Organization’s regional office for the Americas) has published the latest monthly Epidemiological Update on 19 June 2021. As of 16 June, the Region of the Americas contributed 176.48 million cases and 3.82 million deaths, accounting for 40% of global COVID-19 cases and 48% of deaths. The South America subregion accounted for the highest proportion of cases and deaths in the region during May, having overtaken North America in March. Cases have been declining in the region for seven consecutive weeks.
Brazil joins the list of previous countries (Argentina, Aruba, Canada, Mexico, Panama, and the United States of America) which have detected all four variants of concern (VOC) in circulation.
Over 552,300 cases and 13,562 deaths have been recorded among indigenous peoples in 18 countries of the Americas.
Twenty-three countries and territories have cumulatively reported 6,056 cases of COVID-19 related multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children and adolescents (MIS-C), including 129 deaths.
Thirty-five countries have reported over 1.98 million cases, including 9,819 deaths amongst healthcare workers.
