Researchers at the University of Zurich found that people with higher levels of antibodies against harmless coronaviruses (other than SARS-CoV-2) "were less likely to have been hospitalized after catching SARS-CoV-2." A specially developed assay was used to test samples of coronavirus antibodies collected before COVID-19 virus existed. The experts analysed the interaction of the above mentioned antibodies with the SARS-CoV-2 samples and published findings in a press release. This type of immune response is mediated in human body by T cells and called "cross-reactivity". The experts were encouraged by the findings and stated that "...But even though the protection isn’t absolute, cross-reactive immune responses shorten the infection and reduce its severity. And this is exactly what is also achieved through vaccination, just much, much more efficiently".
