Ongoing heart complications after COVID-19

Germany // 18 August, 2020

A German study that looked at 100 patients who had COVID-19 found the majority had their heart affected. The imaging of the heart "revealed cardiac involvement in 78 patients (78%) and ongoing myocardial inflammation in 60 patients (60%), which was independent of preexisting conditions, severity and overall course of the acute illness, and the time from the original diagnosis." The median age of the patients was 49 years, some had no symptoms, most were not hospitalised, while 33% had been severely ill. The testing was carried out on average 70 days after diagnosis. "These findings indicate the need for ongoing investigation of the long-term cardiovascular consequences of COVID-19."
