Mpox outbreak ongoing

19 November: Mpox infections continue to be reported each week bringing the total number this year to 1,623 confirmed cases. Reports have come from 46 of the country's 49 health districts.

15 September: Burundi continues to report mpox infections, though transmission has declined significantly in recent months. So far in 2025, the country has recorded a total of 4,495 cases across 46 of its 49 health districts. No deaths have been reported to date.

28 August: Since the beginning of this year, 4,229 infections have been reported, of which 1,408 have been confirmed. No new health districts have been affected.

5 August: An increase in new infections has been reported over the previous few weeks. Overall, more than 3,750 infections have been recorded in 2025 across 46 health districts. No deaths have occurred. 

11 July: Health authorities have announced 89 new mpox cases, of which 30 have been confirmed. This brings the nation's total for the year to 3,273 suspected and 1,113 confirmed infections. No fatalities have been reported this year.

20 June: Since the last update health authorities have reported an additional 36 cases and zero deaths from 40 health districts, bringing the total number of confirmed cases for 2025 to 1,064.

11 June: In the latest update from the Africa CDC, 40 additional cases and zero deaths have been reported since 29 May. This represents a decrease in the number of weekly cases compared to its peak in 2024. The total number of confirmed cases for 2025 now stands at 1,028.

29 May: Cases of mpox infections in Burundi have declined in recent weeks, with reports of fewer than 50 new cases per week, a significant decline from the 200 weekly new cases reported during the peak of the outbreak in 2024. So far in 2025, 988 confirmed cases and no deaths have been reported.

19 May: Since early May, 80 new mpox infections have been reported from 40 health districts across the country. Since the start of 2025, more than 2,600 suspected cases and no deaths have been reported from 46 of Burundi’s 49 health districts.

Cumulatively, since the outbreak began in July 2024, 8,485 cases and one death have been reported.

13 May: Mpox cases continue to be reported across the country. While the number of newly detected infections has risen slightly over the past month, the overall trend in 2025 remains lower than during the peak of the outbreak in 2024.

25 April: Since the beginning of 2025, more than 2,200 mpox cases have been reported nationwide. However, there has been a steady decline in new infections, with an average of 30 or fewer cases reported weekly, compared to over 200 weekly cases at the peak of the outbreak in October 2024.

Mpox was first detected in the country in July 2024. Testing of confirmed cases in Burundi has identified mpox clade Ib.
