In the latest report from the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reported its first mpox clade Ib infection. The individual, an adult who recently travelled to Uganda, developed symptoms on 11 January 2025, and was diagnosed with mpox on 18 January 2025. The individual is currently receiving care in a healthcare facility. Authorities have not confirmed whether this is an imported mpox infection.
Additionally, at least seven mpox infections have previously been reported in other countries among travellers from the UAE, including China, India, Oman, Pakistan and Thailand, suggesting possible community transmission within the UAE.
