In its most recent update, the Pan American Health Organization analysed monkeypox in women. About 1.8% women constitute of the 22,154 confirmed cases that have known details. The median age of affected women was 30 years. The ratio of female cases for every 100 male cases was slightly more in the Americas region at 2.7 per 100. In Europe, 1.2 women were infected for every 100 cases in men. About 96% of the women were heterosexual. Sexual spread was considered the most likely mode of spread and identified in 61% of cases. In the Americas, Brazil, Canada, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Peru have reported cases in women. An increase in cases among women has been noted and PAHO has recommended authorities plan measures to protect vulnerable groups (such as pregnant women and young children) who are at a higher risk of severe illness.
Globally, more than 46,000 confirmed cases including 15 deaths across 99 member states have been reported since the beginning of this year.
