Scientists in Liberia have announced the ability to perform genomic sequencing of mpox in country for the first time. Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, a biomedical scientist and current Director-General of NPHIL said in a press briefing “Acquiring full biomolecular sequencing capability now gives Liberia’s National Reference Laboratory of the NPHIL the ability to promptly identify pathogen-types (including viruses and bacteria) in-country, right here in Liberia, without sending specimens outside of the country.” Previously, specimens were sent to the National Institutes for Health (NIH) in the USA and the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) in Nigeria. Genomic sequencing is a technique that allows scientists to assess the DNA and RNA or protein in an organism and determine the origin or classification of the protein or organism, or if it has mutated (changed).
