Many countries that are sampling wastewater for evidence of COVID-19 have reported increases in detections. These countries include Canada, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Sweden and United States of America (USA). Wastewater sampling is a useful tool for monitoring the health status of the general community in addition to testing people when they have symptoms or are a close contact. Wastewater sampling can give an early warning of increasing infections as this testing method can detect virus particles regardless of whether people show symptoms or not.
At the same time Bulgaria, Germany, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Russia, USA are also reporting increases in hospitalised patients that are unusual compared with earlier in the year. Russia has also implemented a mask mandate in hospitals.
