In a press release today The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health
announced an increase in influenza activity this week, indicating the beginning of the winter flu season. An increase in hospital admissions associated with influenza was recorded, as well as an overall increase in influenza-like illness (ILI) reported in Accident and Emergency Departments. In addition, several outbreaks of ILI have been reported from institutions such as primary schools, child care centres and residential aged care facilities. Currently, influenza B is the predominate virus circulating however, there are also low levels of Influenza A activity.
The CHP is expecting further increases in influenza activity and is encouraging the community to obtain their seasonal influenza vaccination as early as possible and "urge the public, particularly children, the elderly and chronic disease patients, to observe strict personal, hand and environmental hygiene".
