In their latest Epidemiological Update, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) state that the number of hospitalisations and ICU admissions increased significantly in the Caribbean and the Central American region in the first week of 2022. Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Bermuda, Cuba, Curacao, French Guiana, Jamaica, Sint Maarten, and Suriname experienced a 100% or more relative increase in COVID-19 hospitalisations compared to the previous week while ICU admissions have been high in Jamaica and Puerto Rico. This is concerning as many countries have a low vaccination coverage.
Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Guyana, Puerto Rico and Uruguay reported an incidence rate of over 2,500 cases per 100,000 population. Overall, in the Americas, the number of weekly cases doubled in the first week of 2022 with a 31% increase in weekly deaths.
The Omicron variant has been reported in at least 42 of the 56 countries and territories in the region. The variant of concern (VOC) has been reported in Anguilla, Bahamas, Suriname, Bolivia, and Honduras most recently.
