Higher risk of rehospitalisation and death following COVID-19 hospitalisation

28 January, 2022

Research shows that people hospitalised for COVID-19 are twice at risk of rehospitalisation and death after discharge than general population. This risk persists for many months after discharge from hospital. Data between February to December 2020 from over 24,600 post discharge COVID-19 patients who survived at least a week following discharge was analysed. Experts observed that though similar to influenza hospitalisations, "COVID-19 patients had higher risks of all-cause mortality, readmission or death due to the initial infection, and dementia death, highlighting the importance of postdischarge monitoring." This markedly high risk may pose "substantial[ly] extra burden on healthcare."
