The ECDC released a risk assessment related to the heightened circulation of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The risk was assessed by combining the likelihood of infection and the impact of the illness. It was determined that the risk from RSV is low for the general population, but high for infants under six months, adults 65 years and above, and individuals with certain comorbidities. There is a high risk that the co-circulating RSV, influenza virus, and SARS-CoV-2 will place pressure on EU/EEA healthcare systems in the upcoming weeks.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and Commissioner for Health and Food Safety have released a statement further addressing the importance of preventing seasonal influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The European region is experiencing an increase in influenza and RSV cases. The increase of these viruses in combination with circulating COVID-19 creates potential for overwhelmed health services in Europe this winter.

Thirteen EU/EEA Member States have stated they are experiencing an increase in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases. This seasonal virus typically peaks from October to April, and the rise in cases has been detected from October through 14 November. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety released a statement in October highlighting the concern for putting increased pressure on hospitals and healthcare workers given the potential risk of co-circulation of COVID-19 and influenza. The increase of RSV cases in combination with these viruses could further stress the system.
