The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has been informed of an outbreak of highly pathogenic H7N9 avian flu in China. Several peafowls at the Jinzhou Zoo, Liaoning province, were found to be infected and around 200 birds died or were culled in response. A further 194 birds have been vaccinated to prevent the further spread of disease.
The highly pathogenic H7N9 strain of avian influenza has been circulating in birds in China since 2017. No human infections with H7N9 have been reported since February 2018.
