19 April: The World Organisation for Animal Health has confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in wild birds in Lagoon Island. This was previously reported by local authorities below.
27 February: For the first time in mainland Antarctica, HPAI H5 has been confirmed in wild birds. Samples had been taken from two dead birds found near the Argentine Antarctic base. Previously in October 2023, HPAI was found in the same species of wild birds in the sub-Antarctic on Bird Island, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, less than 2,000 kilometres away.
