Fact check: Does CDC say people are immune for 3 months after they have COVID?

United States // 15 August, 2020

Media headlines today are saying that people who had COVID-19 may be immune for three months after their infections. These headlines are an extrapolation from an edit in a CDC web page that was updated 3 August. The site now says that people who have had COVID-19 in the past three months do not need to quarantine if they have close contact with a COVID-19 patient. After a flurry of media attention today, the CDC issued a clarifying statement on the topic titled "Updated Isolation Guidance Does Not Imply Immunity to COVID-19" in which they state: "Contrary to media reporting today, this science does not imply a person is immune to reinfection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, in the 3 months following infection."
