Novavax, Inc has announced the start of Phase 2b clinical trial in South Africa to determine the efficacy of their COVID-19 vaccine candidate NVX-CoV2373. This is a randomised, observer-blinded, placebo-controlled trial that includes two cohorts, one consists of over 2,660 healthy adults and the other consists of 240 medically stable HIV-positive adults. This allows the vaccine to be assessed across a diversified study population.
The main incentive to evaluate vaccines early in South Africa is to provide evidence on how well the vaccines work in the country’s settings. During Phase 1 of the clinical trial, which was conducted in Australia, this vaccine was well-tolerated and brought out strong antibody responses. Novavax will conduct Phase 2 in the US and Australia in the near future.
