Ebola treatment clinical trial results promising

12 August, 2019

Two treatments being used against Ebola appear to be effective, according to data from a clinical trial released today. REGN-EB3 and mAb114 both appear to improve survival rates among treated Ebola patients. This is the first time data has demonstrated this effect. These treatments could improve survival rates and even make it easier for infected people to seek care. (Sometimes, infected patients do not go for medical care if they feel there is nothing available to help them.) Two other therapies being trialed, Remdesivir and ZMapp, have not shown similar results and are being discontinued in the current trial. Only REGN-EB3 and mAb114 will be used going forward to treat patients in the current Ebola outbreak in the DRC. Officials stressed that these treatments are a tool in the fight against Ebola, but are not sufficient to stop outbreaks.
