Results from a Phase 1 study of an aerosolised version of the CanSino vaccine Ad5-nCoV have been published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases. There were 130 participants enrolled into the study in Wuhan China, who received either an intramuscular injection, an aerosol inhalation or both for their two vaccine doses. The researchers report “Aerosolised Ad5-nCoV is well tolerated, and two doses of aerosolised Ad5-nCoV elicited neutralising antibody responses, similar to one dose of intramuscular injection. An aerosolised booster vaccination at 28 days after first intramuscular injection induced strong IgG and neutralising antibody responses.”
This is the first study to report on an aerosol vaccine that shows promising immune response and no serious side-effects. Further Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials are being conducted to further assess safety and possible dosing.
