ECDC rapid risk assessment on COVID-19 infections among long-term care facility residents in the EU and the UK

19 November, 2020

The European Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) has released a rapid risk assessment on COVID-19 infections among residents in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK). There is a higher probability of COVID-19 being introduced into LTCFs when incidence rates in the community are high. Therefore, the overall probability of infection and further transmission of the virus among residents in LTCFs in EU and the UK is assessed as very high. In addition, hospital admissions and occupancies of intensive care units across the EU and the UK have been increasing, and so the overall impact of infection for LTCF residents is also considered to be very high.
