The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has published its 19th update on the progress of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in the EU and EEA and focusses on the Omicron Variant of Concern (VOC). ECDC note that compared with earlier variants, Omicron infections appear to lead to a less severe clinical outcome and that despite the current overall 14-day notification rate in the EU/EEA being four times higher than previous peaks to date, hospitalisations and deaths are below levels seen in earlier peaks in the pandemic. This has been attributed to the characteristics of the virus and vaccine effectiveness. It is also acknowledged that the long term effects of Omicron infection are not well understood. Moving forwared ECDC envisage that multi-layered surveillance, preparedness, and response strategies for addressing COVID-19 will be essential.
