Community transmission of COVID-19

Tonga // 02 February, 2022

2 February: A further three cases have been announced - a woman and her two children.

1 February: Authorities have detected the first two locally-acquired cases of COVID-19. Both people work at the wharf in Nuku'alofa and were identified through routine testing. Unconfirmed reports indicate the cases have Omicron. It is possible that the infections are linked to COVID-19 positive cases in crew of ships that have arrived to respond to the volcanic eruption in January. Investigations are underway.

In response, authorities are imposing movement restrictions.
