COVID-19 virus on frozen food packaging in China

China // 11 November, 2020

11 November: China will now require cold products imported from other countries to be disinfected before workers handle them, per a notice from the State Council's Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism. The new measure follows a COVID-19 case in Tianjin reported several days ago. The patient works at a local frozen food company and handled frozen pork from Germany. Imported goods and workers who handle them will both be tested for the virus. Storage facilities, transport vehicles, and product packaging will undergo disinfection procedures and be certified compliant before being allowed to enter market.

Since July, Chinese officials have attributed at least 16 cases of COVID-19 linked to frozen imports. China is so far the only nation to identify frozen food a source of COVID-19 transmission.

Posted 19 October: The Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that it found traces of living COVID-19 virus on the outside of frozen food packages in the city of Qingdao, making it the first live virus detection on refrigerated goods. This discovery followed investigations on the recent cluster of cases linked to a hospital in Qingdao. However, the CDC did not specify whether or not the outbreak was caused by the frozen food packaging.
