31 August: Several sources have reported the detection of a mutant strain of coronavirus called DG146. This is a milder but more infectious strain than the strain originally identified in Wuhan, China. DG146 strain was first identified in Germany and has been noted in other European countries, the United States and Malaysia. Further investigations are ongoing.
26 August: Cases have been surging in Jakarta, with over 700 new cases there in the last 24 hours. A total of 160,165 cases have been confirmed nationwide, which includes 6,944 fatalities and over 115,400 recoveries. While the national fatality rate is around 4.3%, it is highest in East Java (7.2%) and Central Java (6.8%) where almost 3,000 fatalities have occurred.
Escalating fines will be issued to people who do not wear masks in public places on repeat occasions.
21 August: Jakarta has been reported over 500 new cases each day for the last week. The surge in cases in the capital city has increased the isolation hospital bed rate to two-thirds occupied. Large-scale social restrictions have been extended in the capital city until at least 27 August. Face masks remain mandatory in public places.
There have been 147,211 cases confirmed across the nation, including 6,418 fatalities and over 100,600 recoveries. Java accounts for 58% of the nation’s total cases.
17 August: Cases continue to surge across more than half of the country’s provinces. A total of 141,370 cases and 6,207 deaths have been confirmed. The highest fatality rates are in East Java (7.3%) and Central Java (6.8%), and the fatality rate in Jakarta is 3.4%. Over 94,400 people have recovered to date.
14 August: More than 2,000 new cases have been reported each day for the last two days, with Jakarta and East Java remaining the hotspot areas. A total of 132,816 cases and 5,968 deaths have been confirmed. Almost 40,000 people remain in treatment. The Government has announced (in Indonesian) that schools in the ‘yellow zones’ will be allowed to open.
10 August: Jakarta has overtaken East Java to become the most affected province again - with over 25,000 cases (20%) of the total 127,503 cases. Cases have been steadily increasing in the nation’s capital since restrictions were eased in June. East Java however continues to have the highest number of fatalities, over 1,850 (32%) of the 5,765 total deaths. The overall case fatality rate is reported to be 4.5%. Over 82,200 people have recovered.
7 August: Cases in Jakarta and East Java continue to surge, with Jakarta reporting 556 new cases on 6 August. A total of 118,753 cases have been confirmed, of which 5,521 fatalities are noted. Over 37,500 cases are currently active. Sulawesi Barat has reported local transmission for the first time.
3 August: Cases continue to steadily rise and a total of 113,134 cases have been confirmed. There have been 5,302 fatalities and over 70,000 people have recovered. Jakarta and East Timor continue to be hotspots for infection, each reporting hundreds of new cases each day. Media report that at least 72 doctors have died from COVID-19 to date.
