COVID-19 in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Status: Outbreak

24 December: Cases have been trending downwards since a peak in at the start of November. An average of 665 new cases were reported each day in the last week, compared to 990 daily cases at the start of the month. The total of 107,570 cases includes 3,838 deaths. More than 30,500 cases remain active. The Bosnian Serb leader, Milorad Dodik, has tested positive for COVID-19.

From 21 December until 10 January, foreign citizens will be required to provide a negative COVID-19 test from the last 48 hours for entry. Full details are available here (in Bosnian).

24 November: Cases have been slightly falling after surging across the country in October. A nighttime curfew from 11pm to 6am has been in effect since 11 November. An average of over 1,100 cases are reported per day, down from over 1,500 per day 3 weeks ago.

In total there have been 81,739 cases confirmed, of which 2,394 people have died and over 47,500 people have recovered. The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) remains the most affected area with around 64%, while Republic Srpska (RS) accounts for 34% and Brcko District (BD) accounts for 2% of all cases.

17 October: Cases have been trending upwards in October, with a daily average of over 415 cases in the last week. In the last 24 hours a daily high of 621 cases was reported. In total 32,845 cases have been confirmed, including 980 deaths and over 7,260 active cases. The capital Sarajevo is witnessing a surge in transmission.

24 September: Cases continue to be reported, with an average of over 260 cases each week during September. A total of 26,081 cases have been confirmed, of which 790 fatalities and over 18,600 recoveries are reported. International borders reopened in mid-September. The Government announced (in Bosnian) that they have signed up the COVAX in order to gain access to COVID-19 vaccines for their citizens when they become available.

4 August: Cases have been sharply rising since late June. A total of 12,462 cases have been confirmed, of which there are 362 deaths and over 6,300 people have recovered. The capital Sarajevo has been a recent hot spot for transmission. A state of emergency continues until at least 18 August, with measures including limits of social gatherings, mandatory mask wearing and social distancing.

May 20: The latest situation report by the WHO has reported 14 new confirmed cases in the last 24 hours with no new deaths.

May 17: An update by the Bosnian Ministry of Health has confirmed one new case of COVID-19 out of 645 tested patients. The new case was in the Tuzla kanton.
