Cases in the country have quadrupled in the past month, due to the more-transmissible Delta variant. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised that people in high or substantial COVID-19 activity areas should wear masks in indoor public spaces regardless of their vaccination status. In such areas, they also advised, "everyday activities should be limited to reduce spread and protect the health care system." The advice adds that vaccinated people who live with vulnerable people (such as young children and immunocompromised people) should wear their masks in public indoor spaces regardless of community transmission levels.
The updated guidance also says teachers, staff and students should be masked in school regardless of vaccination status.
Data shows that vaccinated people who get infected with Delta virus will still be protected from severe illness, but that their viral load may be as high as an infected person who had not been vaccinated. That's new, and it means vaccinated people are more capable of spreading Delta COVID-19 than they have been when infected with other versions of the virus.
