CDC: pregnancy a risk factor for severe COVID-19 infections and premature birth

02 November, 2020

Pregnancy is now considered a risk factor for severe COVID-19 infection, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A study of more than 400,000 people showed that pregnant patients who have COVID-19 infections with symptoms are more likely to have complications or die from the disease than nonpregnant people. Infected, symptomatic pregnant people were more likely to need intensive care and mechanical ventilation, and have a 70 percent increased risk of death when compared to nonpregnant people of the same age. Earlier, the CDC had said pregnancy "might be" a risk factor for severe illness, based on earlier, smaller data sets. Pregnant people with COVID-19 also have a slightly elevated risk for delivering their babies prematurely, according to another CDC study released today.
