CDC Health Advisory – vaccination to prevent COVID-19 outbreaks

United States // 28 July, 2021

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Health Alert Network Health Advisory regarding the urgent need to increase COVID-19 vaccination coverage across the United States. The advisory, Vaccination to Prevent COVID-19 Outbreaks with Current and Emergent Variants — United States, 2021 highlights the need increase the percentage of the population vaccinated to prevent surges in COVID-19 infections and deaths; prevent healthcare facilities from being overwhelmed and broaden vaccine coverage to areas where vaccination rates are low - “disparities in vaccination coverage persist across population groups and geographic areas.”

Between 19 June to 23 July, 2021 COVID-19 cases have increased over 300% nationally. The highly infectious Delta variant, which accounts for over 80% of all COVID-19 infections, is accelerating the spread.  Additionally, the majority of new infections, hospitalisations, and deaths are in the unvaccinated.

CDC reintegrate “Vaccination is a priority national strategy to interrupt SARS-CoV-2 transmission, protect personal and public health, and preserve healthcare system capacity. COVID-19 vaccines are safe and recommended for all persons aged 12 years of age and older, even for those with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection.”.
