Australian COVID-19 vaccine terminated due to HIV false positives

Australia // 11 December, 2020

University of Queensland (UQ), Australia, will abandon its COVID-19 vaccination program after several trial participants returned false positive HIV test results.

The UQ vaccine candidate uses a protein and adjuvant platform, containing the COVID-19 spike protein and a "molecular clamp". A small component is derived from the human immunodeficiency virus, known as HIV, that is not able to infect people or replicate.

The program has been abandoned due to possible public perceptions regarding its safety.
