Although the outbreak reached a milestone on 14 January 2016 when transmission was finally declared over in West Africa, a new case emerged in Sierra Leone the following day. Liberia and Guinea are currently in a 90-day period of heightened surveillance for any sporadic outbreaks. Active transmission continues in Sierra Leone. Sporadic transmission due to the virus lingering in survivors has caused several flare-ups in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
