The country reported its first case in July 2013 and is the third most affected country after Saudi Arabia and South Korea. A surge in cases occurred in July 2014. Most cases had either had exposure to another person with MERS-CoV, to animals or had a travel history that put them at higher risk. However, some people had none of those risk factors. This group showed mild or no symptoms and were detected as a part of contact or workplace screening.
Since then, sporadic human cases continue to be detected.
