Mpox

Mpox is consistently present in Nigeria. Outbreaks in humans have been reported since 2017 and cases have been reported in travellers after leaving Nigeria.

The NCDC has strongly urged the public to report all instances of mpox symptoms to the nearest healthcare facility or through contacting the NCDC toll-free line on 6232.

Vaccination: Campaigns have been ongoing in the country since 2024, prioritising vaccination of those at highest risk in the most affected states.

Bird flu

H5N1 was first detected in February 2006. Sporadic outbreaks have been reported in poultry and wild birds. A resurgence of cases in poultry started in 2015 affecting many states across Nigeria. Since then further outbreaks of H5N1, H5N6 and H5N8 continue to be reported.

Human cases of bird flu

H5N1 was confirmed in a fatal human case in January 2007. There may have been other human cases which have gone undetected.

COVID-19

The first imported case was confirmed in February 2020.
