Mpox

The first case of mpox was reported in July 2024. Since then, there has been local transmission.

Vaccination: In early November 2024, the WHO and partners announced mpox vaccines would be allocated to Kenya. Details regarding their distribution or eligible populations have not been announced.

Bird flu

Bird flu has never been identified in birds or humans in Kenya.

COVID-19

The first cases of COVID-19 were identified in March 2020.

MERS-CoV

In June 2020, an outbreak of MERS-COV was detected in dromedary camels in the north of the country (Marsabit county). Studies in 2017, found that MERS-COV is widespread in dromedary camels in Kenya. Kenya hosts up to 80% of the world’s dromedary camel population, with large exports to the camels to the Arabian Peninsula.

Human infection of MERS-COV in Kenya has previously been detected via blood tests. Documented in a study in April 2020, a number of workers at a camel slaughterhouse returned seropositive blood results.
