Increase in mpox infections in New York City

United States // 07 May, 2024

New York City health authorities have issued an alert due to a substantial increase in mpox cases. While new infections remained relatively low for most of last year, with 2 to 20 monthly detections, since October 2023, an average of 36 monthly cases have been detected. The majority of these cases occurred in people who were not vaccinated or had not completed the two-dose course of the JYNNEOS vaccine. Most individuals experienced mild symptoms.

Authorities advise, "People with potential risk of exposure to mpox should receive two doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine to be fully vaccinated. It is estimated that only one in four people recommended to receive the vaccine in the U.S. are fully vaccinated. Increasing vaccine uptake is essential to preventing infections and severe disease. "

Information on vaccine eligibility and vaccination locations in the city is available online.
